These days, people are so keen about acquiring formal education, the number of people taking jamb every year doubles each year and the university pushes out graduates into the labour market annually... Those employable and those unemployable.
The quest to acquire handwork and to learn trade keeps deteriorating, lot of people don't want to be mechanic anymore, people don't go for boy boy anymore, lot of people don't want to be hairstylist, tailor, carpenter, bricklayer, etc... everyone is hell bent in going to university, then graduate and be carrying file here and there with no job.
I'm not against acquiring formal education, but I think we should start thinking of creating jobs for ourselves and others, we should be thinking of equipping our youths. Technical schools have totally died
off in Nigeria, if not, it was the best option in reducing unemployment rate in our country. Our technical schools died because it was left in the hands of our government, whatever that is left in the hands of Nigeria government is as good as dead.
We have individuals or group of individuals in our society who are stinking rich that they don't know what to do with money, these individual(s) can come together and start up a higher institution where the major thing done there will be skill acquisition... Let it be garnished with general studies like mathematics, english, history, etc.
In order to support formal education and to make the students have the feel of one in a higher institution, students should write Jamb or NABTEB to get admission into the school, students should also pass their WAEC or NECO, let them school a minimum of 2-3 years (depending on the skill the person is acquiring) and then do I.T for one year before graduating. Let the them be issued certificate and if possible go for NYSC.
The institution should have a workshop that will generate money as well for them (that's where most of them will be doing their I.T), customers will be charged a subsidised amount of money for the services rendered to them... This is to attracts patronage. The manufacturing department: like cake, soap, clothes, ice cream, cream, shoes, drinks, bags, etc can still sell their products.
Anyone who does this will be empowering millions of people annually, thereby reducing unemployment rate in Nigeria. There are people that have acquired skills but don't have enough capital to start, such people will be employed in the institution... By the time you have your firsts graduates, they can be absorbed into the system and so on.
This thing might not necessarily start big, it can be started small and it grows big... But believe me, this project will attract government recognition and support once started... It is also profitable.
This can also be a group project where people sponsor this project and become shareholders of the institution, two or more persons can as well come together and start it... But it should never be taken to the government because it wouldn't work under them, it will just last a couple of years under them and then it blows off like a candle.
Indeed, skill acquisition is grossly needed, expecially in a densely populated and developing country like Nigeria. It's a welcome idea
